Charleta B. Tavares (D-Columbus) is proud to join the Ohio Senate to represent Columbus and the 15th District. She is a committed public servant who served as a member of Columbus City Council from 1999 to 2010. Prior to joining Council, Tavares left a legacy for the citizens of Ohio during her 5 ½ year tenure in the Ohio General Assembly as the State Representative in the 22nd House District. Tavares was the first African-American female to serve in the state legislature from Franklin County and the first African-American woman ever to hold a leadership position in the Ohio General Assembly.

Senators Tavares and Turner Introduce Absentee Ballot Legislation
Columbus -State Senators Charleta Tavares and Nina Turner (D-Cleveland) have introduced legislation in the Ohio Senate to restore local control to Ohio's elections process.  If enacted, Senate Bill 227 would allow local boards of election to mail unsolicited applications for absentee ballots and require the Ohio Secretary of State to reimburse the cost of the mailings for elections in even numbered years

Senator Tavares Attends 2011 NCSL Legislative Summit
Columbus - State Senator Charleta B. Tavares recently attended the National Conference of State Legislators' (NCSL) 2011 Legislative Summit. Senator Tavares attended the conference as a member of the Health Committee. She was appointed to the committee by Senate President Tom Niehaus earlier this year.

Senator Tavares Passes Nurses Bill
Columbus - Senator Charleta B. Tavares and joint sponsor Senator Scott Oelslager (R - North Canton) successfully passed Senate Bill 83, the Advanced Practice Nurse Bill, out of the Senate with a 23 to one vote.

Tavares and Schiavoni Introduce Legislation to Expand Long-Term Care Options
Columbus - Senators Charleta B. Tavares and Joseph Schiavoni (D-Canfield) have jointly sponsored Senate Bill 87 which will expand long-term health care options for thousands of Ohioans.  The bill provides an opportunity for individuals who are in nursing home facilities to select home and community-based treatment as alternatives.  The legislation will also reduce the state's nursing home care expenses.

Tavares is First African-American Woman Sworn into 15th Senatorial District
