Senator David Goodman

3rd Senate District
Senator David Goodman

A strong and effective advocate for residents of Ohio’s 3rd Senate District, which includes the communities located in the eastern portion of Franklin County, State Senator David Goodman has spent the last decade working to improve their quality of life.

A native of Bexley, Ohio, Senator Goodman began his career in public service as an Assistant Attorney General for the state of Ohio. In 1995, Goodman was elected to the Bexley City Council, where he played a key role in enacting legislation that increased competition among utility providers to lower rates for Bexley residents. In 1998, Senator Goodman was appointed to the Ohio House of Representatives and was elected to a full term later that year. He was re-elected twice before winning appointment to the Ohio Senate in 2002.

Aided by his legal background, Goodman sponsored comprehensive medical malpractice reform legislation, which has helped in keeping good doctors in Ohio and health care costs in check by limiting frivolous lawsuits. He has also sponsored two bills that deal with expanding access to DNA testing and biological evidence collection to help ensure that only the guilty are put behind bars and that prosecutors have the necessary tools to bring them to justice.

During the 125th, 126th and 127th General Assemblies, Senator Goodman chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee – Civil Justice. This year, he was appointed by Senate President Bill Harris to chair the Senate Reference Committee, which is the committee responsible for determining to which standing committees legislation is referred. He continues to serve on the Judiciary Committee – Civil Justice as Vice Chair, and is also a member of the Judiciary Committee – Criminal Justice, the Health, Human Services and Aging and the Highways and Transportation committees.

Senator Goodman has been the recipient of several awards and honors, including the United States Selective Service Meritorious Award, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Legislator of the Year, the Columbus Jewish Federation Leadership Award, Columbus 40 under 40 and the Ohio Family Physicians Legislator of the Year.

Senator Goodman is a graduate of Bexley High School, Miami University and the Case Western University College of Law. He and his wife Heather reside in New Albany with their two children, Benjamin and Lily.
