Senator Fred Strahorn represents the 5th Senate District encompassing Miami and portions of Montgomery and Darke counties. Prior to joining the Ohio Senate in March 2009, he spent eight years in the Ohio House of Representatives. Senator Strahorn graduated from The Ohio State University with a BA in Aviation Management. He began his public service career as a Legislative Aide to former State Senators Tom Roberts and Mark Mallory.

Senator Strahorn’s Amendment Will Allow for Mental Health Facility to Reopen
Columbus – The Ohio Senate Ways and Means Committee approved State Senator Fred Strahorn’s amendment to Substitute House Bill 313, leading the way toward reopening mental health hospital in Dayton.

The amendment will allow the former Twin Valley state psychiatric hospital in Dayton to be sold to Amamata, LLC, a private health care company for $1.7 million.

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Awareness Act Passes Committee
Columbus – State Senator Fred Strahorn (D-Dayton) is pleased to announce that his Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Awareness Act (SB 216) passed the Senate Health, Human Services and Aging Committee today.

“This legislation is important to me because there are not a lot of healthcare professionals who know much about Complex Regional Pain Syndrome,” said Senator Strahorn.  “The passage of this bill will provide much needed awareness about this condition and direct people who live with debilitating illness to much needed care.”

Ohio Budget Passes with Democratic Support
Columbus - Faced with passing a balanced budget amid difficult economic circumstances, the Ohio Senate passed a balanced two-year State budget.  Throughout the past few weeks, the Ohio Senate, Governor Ted Strickland, and the House of Representatives have deliberated on the budget bill to expand health coverage and invest in Ohio's future through education reform.

Senator Strahorn Helps Lead Effort to Change Department's Name
Columbus - The Ohio Senate voted unanimously to pass Senate Bill 79, legislation co-sponsored by State Senator Fred Strahorn, that changes the name of the Department of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities to the Department of Developmental Disabilities.  SB 79 also calls for county MRDD boards to drop the words "Mental Retardation" and change their names to boards of developmental disabilities.
