Jim Hughes began his career in public service as a prosecutor in the Columbus City Prosecutor’s Office and later, as an Assistant County Prosecutor for Franklin County. In 2000, he was selected to serve the remainder of a term in the Ohio House of Representatives and was re-elected to that post four times. In 2008, he was elected to the Ohio Senate to represent Ohio’s 16th Senate District, which includes the western portion of Franklin County.

Hughes wins final approval for his bill to improve public safety and assist law enforcement
Columbus- State Senator Jim Hughes today announced he has won final approval for Senate Bill 58, his legislation that prohibits a person from collecting another individual's bodily substances without their consent. Hughes introduced the bill last year following incidents in central Ohio where a convicted sex offender was discovered attempting to obtain and drink the urine of young boys. Because there was no law in place that specifically addresses this situation, prosecutors could only charge him with a lesser offense.

Hughes' bill providing increased oversight and regulation of 'puppy mills' approved by Senate committee
Columbus- State Senator Jim Hughes today announced that Senate Bill 95, his bill that seeks to provide more oversight of dog breeders and to prevent the mistreatment of companion animals, has been approved by the Senate State and Local Government & Veterans' Affairs Committee. Hughes, who serves as chairman of the committee, co-sponsored SB 95 with Senator Gary Cates (R- West Chester).

Hughes passes bill that would help save Columbus taxpayers' dollars
Columbus- State Senator Jim Hughes today won support for Senate Bill 270, his legislation that would create a pilot program in central Ohio for dam construction projects that reduces the bonding amount required prior to issuing a construction permit, thereby saving Columbus residents' tax dollars as the city constructs a new, 850-acre drinking water reservoir in Delaware County.

Hughes and Goodman announce local companies to receive state funds for expansion, job creation
Columbus- State Senators Jim Hughes and David Goodman (R- New Albany) announced that the state Controlling Board recently awarded $2.3 million in state grants and loans to four companies in support of projects that will create a total of 141 new full-time jobs and retain more than 350 others.

Ohio Senate passes Hughes' bill that would allow emergency responders to report traffic violations
Columbus- State Senator Jim Hughes today passed legislation that would give firefighters, EMS responders and other emergency personnel the authority to report traffic law violations under certain circumstances. Senator Hughes introduced Senate Bill 166 after hearing from several local first responders about the increasing number of traffic violations they witness while responding to an emergency scene.

Hughes announces applications being accepted for Legislative Internship Program
Columbus-State Senator Jim Hughes recently announced that the Ohio Legislative Service Commission (LSC) is now accepting applications for its Legislative and Telecommunications Internship Program. LSC will hire more than 20 interns to work with members of the Ohio General Assembly during 2011.

Hughes announces funding for improvements at Interstate 71 interchange in Grove City
Columbus- State Senator Jim Hughes recently announced the state Controlling Board approved a $2 million Logistics and Distribution Stimulus Loan for improvements at the Interstate 71 and State Route 665 (London-Groveport Road) interchange in Grove City. The $34 million construction project will result in the city creating the equivalent of 84 full-time jobs.

Hughes announces funding for job creation at area businesses
Columbus- State Senator Jim Hughes announced the state Controlling Board has approved a $25,000 Rapid Outreach Grant to the Telamon Corporation to purchase new machinery and equipment, a project that will create 38 new jobs in Columbus. The Board also approved a $30,000 grant to Touch Bionics in Hilliard for a project that is expected to create 20 new jobs. Rapid Outreach Grants are used by the state to assist companies and communities creating or retaining jobs in Ohio.

Columbus legislators introduce constitutional amendment to preserve local control over casino developments

Hughes announces OSU, Columbus State to receive funds for Choose Ohio First Scholarships

COLUMBUS- State Senators Jim Hughes and David Goodman (R- New Albany) today announced that Columbus State Community College and The Ohio State University (OSU) are among the institutions of higher education selected to receive a total of $13.3 million in funding from the Choose Ohio First Scholarship program. The funding was approved by the state Controlling Board earlier this week.
