Senator Jon Husted

6th Senate District
Senator Jon Husted

When State Senator Jon Husted talks about Dayton and the Miami Valley, he does not dwell on what was; instead, he describes an area that is blessed with world-class universities, a strong workforce, cutting-edge businesses and great communities that together have the potential to transform the region into a hub for research and innovation, attract investment and jobs and spur economic activity. This optimism, vision and drive to succeed carried Jon from the football field at the University of Dayton to his election as State Representative for the 37th Ohio House District, including two terms as Speaker of the House, and now the Ohio Senate, where he represents the 6th Senate District.

Throughout his tenure in the General Assembly, Senator Husted has been committed to making sure every Ohio child has the opportunity to pursue a quality education, while championing policy that will help improve our state’s economy and create better jobs.

For instance, during the 127th General Assembly, he led efforts to create the Choose Ohio First Scholarship, which provides $100 million to Ohio’s colleges and universities to grant scholarships to students studying in a STEM field (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine). He has also been a strong advocate for school choice, helping unveil the Ohio Educational Choice Scholarship Program in 2005, which is a nationally recognized initiative that provides much-needed educational options for Ohio children and their families.

In addition, Jon worked as House Speaker during the 126th General Assembly to pass the most fiscally-conservative state budget in more than 40 years. The bill included a major overhaul of Ohio’s business tax code to help make our state a more attractive place for business investment, as well as a 21-percent income tax cut, which is the largest income tax cut in Ohio history.

Since coming to the Senate in January, Senator Husted has not only maintained his commitment to education and Ohio’s economy, but he has also been working with a number of stakeholder groups to reform our state’s hyper-partisan system for drawing legislative and congressional districts and bring more balance, fairness and transparency to Ohio’s elections process. He has sponsored Senate Joint Resolution 5, a constitutional amendment that would establish a seven member board to draw legislative and congressional boundaries. The proposal requires a bipartisan, five-vote supermajority from the board to approve any new redistricting plan.

Senator Husted currently serves as chairman of the Senate Government Oversight Committee, which is responsible for promoting increased accountability and transparency in the operation of state government offices and agencies. In addition, he is a member of the Senate Education Committee, Energy and Public Utilities Committee and the Rules Committee.

An Ohio native, Jon attended the University of Dayton, where he earned All-American honors as a defensive back for the 1989 Division III National Championship football team. After receiving his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UD, he chose to stay in the Dayton area to work for the Montgomery County Commissioners and was later hired as Vice President of Business and Economic Development at the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce. While in this position, he decided to run for political office.

Jon is a resident of Kettering and serves as Director of Workforce Education and Employer Services for the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce. With all of his responsibilities, however, he considers his most important roles to be that of husband to his wife, Tina, and father to his children, Alex, Katie and Kylie.
