Senator Mark Wagoner

2nd Senate District
Senator Mark Wagoner

Senator Mark Wagoner represents the 2nd District, which includes Erie, Wood, most of Ottawa and the western parts of Lucas County. Prior to his term in the Senate, he served two terms as a State Representative.

Senator Wagoner has earned a reputation among his peers in the Legislature as an effective and strong voice for northern Ohio and is well-regarded in his district for putting partisan politics aside in order to make progress for the region. Mark’s main focus is on the issues that are of the most concern to his constituents – economic development and job creation, education, health care and being a watchdog of taxpayer dollars. Mark also consistently supports policies that promote individual responsibility and strong families.

For the 129th General Assembly, Senator Wagoner serves as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and is also a member of the Rules and Reference Committee.

In addition to these duties, Mark has been appointed to the War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission and the Ohio Constitutional Modernization Commission. He recently served as Co-Chairman of the Joint Select Committee of the Impact of the Changing Automobile Industry on Ohio, a bipartisan committee that investigated approaches to revitalizing and enhancing Ohio’s role in the auto industry. Mark was the primary sponsor of legislation that updated the Ohio Auto Dealer’s Franchise Law.

Senator Wagoner also served as Chairman of the National Statuary Collection Study Committee, which was created to select a replacement statue for Ohio to be displayed at the United States Capitol as part of the National Statuary Hall Collection.

Over the years, Senator Wagoner has sponsored and passed several important bills, including those that authorized the merger between the University of Toledo and the Medical University of Ohio – the first merger of two major universities in Ohio’s history. Other laws Mark passed – or was heavily involved with – include overhauling Ohio’s Medicaid system, improving collection of unpaid child support from lottery winners, revamping Ohio’s trust laws and curbing predatory lenders. Mark also helped to pass the Great Lakes Compact, renewed Clean Ohio, and helped to create a multi-million dollar venture fund to help incubate and develop alternative energy companies in northwest Ohio.

For his hard work in the General Assembly, Mark has received numerous awards, including, the “Watchdog of the Treasury” from the United Conservatives of Ohio, the “Fiscal Pistol” from the Buckeye Institute, the Bittersweet Farms Adult Autism Advocacy Award, the Voices of Children Award, the Ohio Nurses Association Legislator of the Year and an appointment to the prestigious Bowhay Institute for Legislative Leadership Development. He has also represented Ohio as a Tolls Fellow through the Council of State Governments. He has served as a Midwestern Higher Education Compact Commissioner and was a 2009 Aspen Institute Rodel Fellow.

Mark graduated cum laude with degrees in government and history from Georgetown University and holds a law degree from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, which named him an Outstanding Recent Alumni in 2005. While in law school, Mark served as the President of the Student Bar Association and was a senior editor for the Ohio State Law Journal.

After law school, Mark returned home to Lucas County, where for the past 10 years he has been practicing law at Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP where he is now a partner. Ohio SuperLawyers recognized Mark as a “Rising Star” and the Toledo Bar Association has twice recognized Mark for his pro bono work.

Mark and his wife, Merideth, have a son, Mickey, and a daughter, Taylor. They currently live in Lucas County where they are fixing up an old house. They are parishioners of Gesu Church in Toledo.
