Charleta B. Tavares (D-Columbus) is proud to join the Ohio Senate to represent Columbus and the 15th District. She is a committed public servant who served as a member of Columbus City Council from 1999 to 2010. Prior to joining Council, Tavares left a legacy for the citizens of Ohio during her 5 ½ year tenure in the Ohio General Assembly as the State Representative in the 22nd House District. Tavares was the first African-American female to serve in the state legislature from Franklin County and the first African-American woman ever to hold a leadership position in the Ohio General Assembly.

11.18.14 - Tavares Gives Sponsor Testimony For Pride Month And Support American Made Apparel Legislation

 

Columbus – On November 18, Senator Charleta B. Tavares (D - Columbus) presented sponsor testimony on two pieces of legislation in the Senate State Government Oversight and Reform Committee. Senate Bill 317 would designate June as LGBTQ Pride Month in Ohio while Senate Bill 320 would require state agencies to only purchase uniforms and other apparel items that are made with American textiles, materials, and supplies.

COLUMBUS – Today, State Rep. Kathleen Clyde (D-Kent) and Assistant Senate Democratic Leader Charleta B. Tavares (D-Columbus) held a press conference announcing legislation to address the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby. In that decision, the Court ruled that some corporations cannot be required to provide insurance coverage for contraception methods that would violate the religious beliefs of company owners. The development was widely panned as a setback to the personal liberty of hard-working American women.
