Eklund Announces Passage of Bill to Support Families of Disabled and Fallen Officers
October 14, 2015
Senator Eklund speaks on the floor of the Ohio Senate in favor of a bill to provide compensation to the families of volunteer and part-time officers who are disabled or fallen in the line of duty

The Ohio Senate today passed Senate Bill 11, sponsored by Senators John Eklund (R-Munson Township) and Frank LaRose (R-Copley), to create the Volunteer Police Officer’s Dependent Fund.

The fund would function in the same manner as a similar fund established for volunteer firefighters and their families. Senate Bill 11 would provide death benefits to survivors of volunteer, part-time and reserve officers killed in the line of duty. It would also provide disability benefits to such disabled officers and deputies.

"Providing this compensation for families of our fallen law enforcement officers is the least we can do to honor such heroic public servants," said Eklund. "We owe it to these brave men and women to provide assistance to their loved ones."

The bill was named the Jason Gresko Act, as a memorial to a part-time officer from Willoughby, Ohio who was killed in the line of duty in September 2012.

Senate Bill 11 will now go to the Ohio House of Representatives for further consideration.
