State Senator Sean J. O’Brien (D-Bazetta), a longtime voice in the effort to secure the extradition of Claudia Hoerig from Brazil, praised her conviction today for aggravated murder for the 2007 killing of her husband, Major Karl Hoerig.
“After 12 years, the saga to bring Claudia Hoerig to justice has reached its long-awaited conclusion,” said Sen. O’Brien. “Major Karl Hoerig was an honorable man who served his country proudly and was a pillar of his community. While this verdict can never bring him back, I am glad his killer has now been held to account for her callous and heinous crime. I am hopeful that the sentence she receives on February 8 fits the horror of her crime.”
As part of federal and state legislators’ push to bring Hoerig to justice, Senator O’Brien introduced an Ohio Senate resolution urging the President, the U.S. Secretary of State and Congress to compel Brazil to extradite Hoerig to stand trial. Hoerig was extradited in January 2018.
Hoerig will be sentenced on February 8 and faces a possible life sentence.
