7th Senate District

State Senator Shannon Jones is currently serving her first full term in the Ohio Senate and represents the 7th Senate District, which includes all of Warren County and portions of Hamilton County. Throughout her tenure in the Legislature - she previously served as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 2007 to 2009 - Shannon has hit the ground running, earning key leadership posts and a seat at the table on issues of importance to her constituents.
Since joining the Senate, Jones has prioritized revitalizing the state economy, creating jobs and ensuring the state lives within its means. With concerns about Ohio's financial health and the ability of the state to balance its budget in the future, Jones was named co-chair of the Budget Planning and Management Commission. This bipartisan panel of lawmakers worked to develop recommendations for how to balance the upcoming two-year state budget as well as exploring long-term solutions to Ohio's budget challenges.
For the 129th General Assembly, Jones was selected by her colleagues to serve as the Majority Whip - the number four post in the Senate chamber. She has been named vice-chair of the budget-writing Senate Finance Committee, and also serves on the Energy and Public Utilities Committee, the Health, Human Services and Aging Committee, the Insurance, Commerce and Labor Committee and the Rules and Reference Committee.
Jones’ time in the General Assembly has also been marked by numerous legislative accomplishments. In response to the Joe the Plumber scandal in which public officials accessed the records of a private citizen for political purposes, Jones sponsored and passed state law to ensure the private information held by state government agencies is better protected. She also played a critical role in the development of the state energy bill and served as the House’s point person on Medicaid. Additionally, Jones worked closely with Ohio Children’s Hospitals as the primary sponsor of legislation, now law, which requires young children to be properly restrained in a booster seat to prevent fatal injuries.
Jones received the Antoinette Eaton Advocacy Award in 2009 from the Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics for her efforts to improve the health and welfare of Ohio children. She has also been awarded a Golden Apple by the Ohio Coalition of eSchool Families and was named Legislator of the Year by the County Boards of Developmental Disabilities and a Watchdog of the Treasury by the United Conservatives of Ohio.
Prior to running for elective office, Jones worked behind the scenes and on behalf of the residents of southwestern Ohio, as chief of staff for former Congressman Steve Chabot, a regional representative for then-State Treasurer Joe Deters and as a district director for former U.S. Senator Mike DeWine. She has also been active in local politics, holding leadership positions in the Hamilton County Republican Party and on the congressional campaigns of Mike Turner and Steve Chabot.
In her community Jones is a member of the Springboro Area Chamber of Commerce and the Warren County Farm Bureau. She is a graduate of Leadership Warren County and served on the board of Talbert House, a mental health, community corrections and substance abuse non-profit.
A graduate of the University of Cincinnati with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication, Shannon and her husband of 17 years, Russell, live in Clearcreek Township where they are raising their two children, Jacob and Anna. The Jones family is a member of Saint Mary's Parish in Franklin – and enjoy spending time at local sporting events rooting on the Springboro Panthers.
