Senator Shirley Smith represents Cleveland and the 21st Senate District. She joined the Senate in 2006 and serves as Assistant Minority Leader. Prior to joining the Senate, she spent eight years in the Ohio House of Representatives. Senator Smith is a strong and passionate advocate for poor, minority, and disenfranchised citizens across the State of Ohio. Senator Smith began her career not in government but in the field of sales and marketing. She worked for a major Cleveland radio station as a talk show host before moving on to television.

Senator Smith Introduces Legislation to Close Loopholes in Tier III Sex Offender Notification Laws
ColumbusState Senator Shirley Smith introduced legislation that closes two loopholes in Ohio's Tier III sex offender notification laws today.  The bill has bipartisan cosponsorship, and it is supported by Cuyahoga County Sheriff Bob Reid and the Buckeye State Sheriffs Association.

Ohio AAA and Law Enforcement Testify in Support of Senator Smith's Legislation
Columbus -State Senators heard compelling testimony from supporters of Senator Shirley Smith's legislation to create a statewide ban on texting and driving.  Summit County Sheriff's Office Chief Garry Moneypenny and Brian Newbacher, Director of Public Affairs of AAA East Central told members of the Senate Highways and Transportation Committee why they are backing Senate bill 164.

Senator Smith Thankful for Holiday Opening of Innerbelt Lanes and Ramps
Cleveland – After closely working with the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) on its Innerbelt Bridge Safety Plan, State Senator Shirley A. Smith congratulated ODOT on reopening all lanes and ramps on the bridge in time for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Repairs which began several months ago were recently completed, allowing ODOT to reopen the W. 14th Street onramp to I-90 eastbound, as well as all lanes over the Innerbelt Bridge and the Ontario Street entrance ramp to I-90 westbound.

Senator Smith Announces Progress on Inner Belt Plan
Cleveland - Having worked closely with the Ohio Department of Transportation to pursue an aggressive timeline on repairs to Cleveland's Interstate 90 Inner Belt Bridge, State Senator Shirley Smith and ODOT officials are advancing the latest and most comprehensive phase of the Inner Belt Bridge Safety Plan with plans to reopen closed lanes and ramps as early as the end of November.

Senator Smith Appointed to Minority Business Advisory Council
Columbus - Senator Shirley Smith has been appointed to the Minority Business Advisory Council for the 128th General Assembly.  The Council, established by executive order by Governor Ted Strickland, will coordinate the state's efforts to maximize opportunities and growth of minority businesses.
