Senator Shirley Smith represents Cleveland and the 21st Senate District. Prior to joining the Senate in 2006, Senator Smith spent eight years in the Ohio House of Representatives. She formerly served as the Senate's Assistant Minority Leader.  Senator Smith is a strong and passionate advocate for poor, minority, and disenfranchised citizens across the State of Ohio. Senator Smith began her career not in government but in the field of sales and marketing. She worked for a major Cleveland radio station as a talk show host before moving on to television.

Senator Smith Stands Up for Ohioans, Votes Against Budget Bill
Columbus - State Senator Shirley Smith voted against House Bill 153, the biennial operating budget for Fiscal Years 2012 and 2013.  Noting that she and her Democrat colleagues tried to improve the legislation by offering amendments on a broad range of topics, Senator Smith said that she could not support a budget that included the sale of state assets, the downsizing of the Office of Ohio Consumers' Counsel, and the unfair preferential treatment for Ohio's wealthiest school districts.

Senate Democrats Oppose Deeply Flawed Election Reform Bill
Columbus - All the members of the Ohio Senate Democratic Caucus voted against SB 148-a deeply flawed election reform bill that will suppress voter turnout.   The partisan legislation slashes early voting from 35 days to just 11, puts Ohioan's personal information at risk and imposes new restrictions that will lead to voter confusion.
