Senator Sue Morano

13th Senate District
Senator Sue Morano

State Senator Sue Morano and her husband Mark live in Lorain with their three children. She is a Registered Nurse, a wife and a mother who is active in her church, her community and the nurses' union she helped to form at the Community Health Partners Hospital in Lorain.

Sue attended college at Lorain County Community College and graduated with an associate's degree in nursing. The following month she began her nursing career at St. Joseph's Hospital in Lorain. At St. Joe’s Sue worked on the night shift where she administered chemotherapy and medications to patients and provided their post-surgery care. As a result of her dedication to her patients’ care Sue was named the American Cancer Society's "Nurse of Hope" for Lorain County in 1986.

That same year, Sue married Mark Morano, who currently works as a journeyman machinist in Avon and the couple moved into the home in Lorain where they still reside. In 1988, their first son, Anthony, was born followed by Andrew in 1991 and Katie in 1993.

Since 1995 Sue has served in the intensive care unit where she continues to manage the care of trauma and heart attack patients and provides support and decision-making guidance to families in crisis. Like most nurses in America, Sue is concerned about changes taking place in the healthcare system and their impact on the quality of care that patients receive.

On January 2nd 2007 Sue was sworn in as the first female State Senator for the 13th district which includes Lorain County, Huron County and the six easternmost townships of Seneca County. Sue currently serves as the Ranking Minority Member on the Health, Human Services and Aging committee and the Environment Committee. She also currently sits on the Education committee; Agriculture Committee; Joint Committee on Agency Rule Review; the Ohio Retirement Study Council. Furthermore, Sue sits on several special committees and advisory board for the Ohio Senate. Some of these boards include The Joint Legislative Study Commission on Most Favored Nations Clauses in Healthcare Contracts, Great Lakes Compact Advisory Board and the Healthy Ohio Advisory Council, just to name a few.

Since being sworn in Sue has introduced legislation such as the Prevention First Act which is vital to improving healthcare services for women. It creates a plan to ensure access to prescription contraception for women. In addition, the Prevention First Act creates an educational program for students to learn methods to prevent unintended pregnancies and the contraction of sexually transmitted diseases.

In January of 2008, Sue was appointed to chair the Nursing Education Study Committee which was formed to investigate ways to improve the quality of nursing education and to make education more affordable for nurses who want to go back to school.
As a mother and nurse, Sue knows what is ailing hard-working Ohioans in the 13th District and she is working to find ways to provide affordable health care, quality education for our children, and good-paying jobs to the people of her community.
