Charleta B. Tavares (D-Columbus) is proud to join the Ohio Senate to represent Columbus and the 15th District. She is a committed public servant who served as a member of Columbus City Council from 1999 to 2010. Prior to joining Council, Tavares left a legacy for the citizens of Ohio during her 5 ½ year tenure in the Ohio General Assembly as the State Representative in the 22nd House District. Tavares was the first African-American female to serve in the state legislature from Franklin County and the first African-American woman ever to hold a leadership position in the Ohio General Assembly.

04.16.14 - Tavares Joins National Organization In Calling For The Restoration Of Voting Rights

 

Columbus-Senator Charleta B. Tavares, Assistant Senate Democratic Leader (D-Columbus) and Regional Director of NBCSL  announced – In the face of recent suppressive attacks on voting rights across the nation, that the National Black Caucus of State Legislators (NBCSL) released a special report on state-led, expansive voting rights legislation.  Senator Tavares joins NBCSL in its state-by-state call for the full restoration of voting rights for every American.

04.01.14 - Senator Tavares Honors Lady Nubians On Senate Floor

 

Columbus – State Senator Charleta B. Tavares (D – Columbus) recognized the Lady Nubians of Columbus Africentric Early College during Senate session on Tuesday, April 1st, in honor of their 2014 Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Division III State Girls Basketball Championship Title. The Lady Nubians beat Versailles High School, 49-37, on March 15 in the championship game.

 
 

03.31.14 - Senator Tavares Introduces Bill To Ban The "Re-homing" Of Children

 

Columbus- Senator Charleta B. Tavares has introduced SB 311. The legislation jointly sponsored by Senator Peggy Lehner (R-Kettering), bans the re-homing of adopted children in Ohio.  Re-homing is also referred to as “disrupted or non-legalized adoption” and is the act of the transferring of a child from their legal adoptive parents to unauthorized individuals.
