Senator Tom Sawyer represents the 28th Senate District covering Portage County and portions of Summit County. He began his career in public service in 1976 as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives. After his tenure in the Ohio House, Senator Sawyer was elected Mayor of Akron in 1983. He then spent 16 years in the United States Congress. After a brief tenure on the State Board of Education, Senator Sawyer joined the Ohio Senate in 2007.

Senator Sawyer and Representative Garrison Introduce Bill to Enhance Education in Ohio
Columbus-State Senator Tom Sawyer and State Representative Jennifer Garrison (D-Marietta) today introduced legislation that will bolster Ohio schools and promote student success.  The companion bills in the House and Senate position Ohio to access a share of the $4 billion "Race to the Top" fund initiated by the federal government.

Senator Sawyer Appointed to School Funding Advisory Council
Columbus - On Thursday, October 29th, Senator Tom Sawyer was appointed to the School Funding Advisory Council by Senate President Bill Harris.  The Council was created by Governor Ted Strickland and the Ohio General Assembly as a part of the education reforms in the recent biennial budget bill, House Bill 1.

Ohio Budget Passes with Democratic Support
Columbus - Faced with passing a balanced budget amid difficult economic circumstances, the Ohio Senate today passed a balanced two-year State budget.  Throughout the past few weeks, the Ohio Senate, Governor Ted Strickland, and the House of Representatives have deliberated on the budget bill to expand health coverage and invest in Ohio's future through education reform.

Senator Tom Sawyer Appointed to Ohio Complete Count Committee
Columbus - Senator Tom Sawyer was appointed by Senate Democratic Leader Capri S. Cafaro (D-Hubbard) to the Complete Count Committee for the 2010 Census.  The committee, established by an executive order by Governor Ted Strickland, will work with local communities to ensure Ohio receives its fair share of funding from the federal government.
