Columbus—State Senator Nina Turner (D-Cleveland) issued the following statement today regarding the approval of a .05 percent income tax increase by the residents of Shaker Heights:

“I commend the citizens of Shaker Heights for their willingness to invest in their community’s future. Despite devastating cuts that the state passed on to local governments and the repeal of the estate tax, it is heartening to see voters support the vital services that their city provides.

“Even so, Shaker Heights should not have to ask its residents for a tax increase while the state sits on hundreds of millions of dollars in surplus revenue—funds resulting from drastic cuts to local governments and school districts. It is my hope that during the upcoming budget process we can restore fairness to the funding of local governments and provide relief to local taxpayers.”
