Schaffer Applauds ODNR Grants to Rural Fire Departments
February 22, 2022
COLUMBUS - State Senator Tim Schaffer (R-Lancaster) applauded the announcement last week by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) of the recipients of their Volunteer Fire Assistance (VFA) grants.

"Our rural fire departments play a critical role in protecting and preserving our state's ecosystems, while operating with mostly volunteers. It is critical that we provide as much support to these units as possible," Schaffer said.

The recipients include the Basil, Hocking, Richland, Cassell Station and South Zanesville fire departments.

The VFA Grant program is focused on helping fire departments acquire wildland fire equipment (UTVs / ATVs / wildfire slip-in units), PPE, MARCS communication devices, and other items that support rural fire department development. Fire departments located within the ODNR Forestry Wildfire Protection Areas are eligible to apply for VFA grants of up to $10,000. This year, the Division was able to award almost $395,000 to fund 57 programs across the state.
