Thomas and Yuko Comment on DeWine's Police Reform Plan
June 17, 2020

Today, Ohio Senate Minority Leader Kenny Yuko (D-Richmond Heights) and Assistant Minority Leader Cecil Thomas (D-Avondale) issued the following statements:

Sen. Yuko: “We must have a much larger conversation about racism in Ohio, with everyone sitting at the table. We need to address inequality in our criminal justice system, but also in health care, education and housing, just to name several very important issues. This conversation starts by declaring racism a public health crisis – we can’t fix a problem we refuse to see.”

Sen. Thomas: “I’m always open to discussing specific proposals, but we can’t address racism until all three branches of government acknowledge that racism is a public health crisis. It is a systemic problem that requires a systemic response from all branches of government. I am concerned that the legislature will not act in a timely manner. We all remember what happened with the Governor’s Strong Ohio gun reform bill – the legislature stalled its passage. We can’t let that happen this time because justice cannot wait.”
