Senator Yuko Statement on the Passing of Former State Senator Judy Sheerer
January 7, 2016

COLUMBUS - State Senator Kenny Yuko (D-Richmond Heights) released the following statement on the passing of former State Representative and State Senator Judy Sheerer:

“My condolences go out to Mr. Sheerer and his family at this difficult time. Senator Sheerer was a great advocate for the people of the 25th Senate District and the diverse neighborhoods she represented.  I feel fortunate to have been able to work with her on labor issues during her time as a legislator. Ohio has lost a great leader.”

Judy Sheerer graduated with an economics degree from Cleveland State University and went on to serve in the Ohio House of Representatives from 1982 to 1992, where she eventually served as Majority Whip. She was then appointed to serve in the Ohio Senate representing Senate District 25, and won a full Senate term in 1994.

During her time in the legislature, Sheerer was most notably credited with expanding the role of nurses in the state of Ohio. She also helped acquire a TTD text method through which the deaf community could communicate with the legislature. Sheerer has been decorated by many organizations as a leader among legislators in the state of Ohio.
