Senator Yuko Urges Local Governments to Consider Benefits of Medical Marijuana Businesses
September 7, 2016

COLUMBUS— Today, State Senator Kenny Yuko (D-Richmond Heights) is sending an open letter to local governments encouraging them to avoid passing restrictions on medical marijuana businesses before the rules for the program are created.

In the letter, Senator Yuko explains that the formal process to create administrative rules for the program’s structure cannot begin until September 8th. He suggests that local government officials contact the rule-making agencies during the formal process to express any concerns, and also hold a public comment period before considering a ban.

The letter reads, in part, “Speaking with people in the community is precisely how I came to learn about the many studies that show medicinal cannabis can greatly improve quality of life for patients who are suffering. You may be surprised to discover who would benefit from a medical marijuana business in your community.”

In addition, Senator Yuko hopes Ohio residents will reach out to their local leaders to offer input on this issue.

“Local lawmakers need to hear from you, the people that they represent, who feel strongly about the need for medical marijuana in Ohio. The only way to open people’s minds to the good medical marijuana can do is to tell your stories,” said Senator Yuko. “We heard you in Columbus. Now it is time for patients and caregivers to take your stories to your community representatives.”
