Eklund Praises Passage of Bill to Support Families of Disabled and Fallen Officers
December 8, 2015

State Senator John Eklund (R-Munson Township) praised the House passage of a bill that would create a Volunteer Police Officer’s Dependent Fund to assist the families of fallen officers. Eklund co-sponsored the Senate bill with state Senator Frank LaRose (R-Copley).

The fund would function in the same manner as a similar fund established for volunteer firefighters and their families. Senate Bill 11 would provide death benefits to survivors of volunteer, part-time and reserve officers killed in the line of duty. It would also provide disability benefits to such disabled officers and deputies.

"I am proud that we have come together to ensure that the loved ones of these brave men and women receive the assistance they deserve," said Eklund. "Providing this compensation for families of our fallen law enforcement officers is the least we can do to honor such heroic public servants," said Eklund.

The bill was named the Jason Gresko Act, as a memorial to a part-time officer from Willoughby, Ohio who was killed in the line of duty in September 2012.

Senate Bill 11 passed the Ohio House without amendment and will now go to the Governor for his signature.
