Eklund Sponsors Legislation to Restore Local Control of Roads
March 3, 2015
Senator Eklund delivers sponsor testimony to the Committee on State and Local Government.

Senator John Eklund (R-Munson Township) delivered testimony before a senate committee today for a bill that would grant counties the ability to control traffic on local roadways.

Senator Eklund is the sponsor of Senate Bill 57 which would address limitations imposed by a 1993 Supreme Court ruling that took away local control of county and township roadways.

Before 1993, Ohio law was interpreted to allow counties to exercise some authority over regulating traffic on local roads. At that time, the Ohio Supreme Court ruled that such local control must be granted by the General Assembly.

"The best regulation of local roadways is done by local governments which are most familiar with the unique traffic conditions of their jurisdictions and better equipped to address the needs of their communities," said Eklund.

The bill awaits a second hearing before the Senate Committee on State and Local Government.
