Rudy's Hot Dog, Local Centenarian Share Hundredth Birthday Celebration
February 14, 2020
A double centenarian celebration commenced on Friday when state Senator Teresa Fedor (D-Toledo) recognized 100-year-old Jack Tongring with a Senate President Letter for his birthday and Rudy’s Hot Dog with a Senate Resolution to honor the restaurant’s 100 years of service in Toledo.

Jack Tongring, who currently lives in Toledo, was born in East Cleveland on February 15, 1920. He graduated from Ohio State University in 1948 following his service in the United States Army during World War II. For 31 years, Jack taught music education in schools throughout Ohio, starting first in Hicksville and Defiance and finishing in Toledo. There, Jack taught at DeVilbiss High School and Whitmer High School, where he retired in 1980. Throughout his teaching career, Jack directed the marching band, pit band, orchestra and jazz bands, as well as elementary beginning band in each school district.

“Mr. Tongring has served both his country and his community with great passion, which is a legacy he will carry into his second century,” Fedor said. “He has imparted his deep love of music to his students and greatly impacted countless other members of our community.”

Jack has maintained enthusiastic involvement with Toledo’s music community throughout his life. In addition to serving as the assistant director with the All Ohio State Fair Band for 30 years, Jack played with the Toledo Symphony and the Toledo Concert Band. He was also a longtime member of the Toledo Federation of Musicians, and he served as an adjudicator for solo and ensemble concerts in both Ohio and Indiana. Jack also enjoyed giving music lessons to inner-city students through the after-school enrichment program at the Frederick Douglass Community Center in Toledo.

When deciding where to celebrate his milestone birthday, Jack and his family and friends looked no further than Rudy’s Hot Dog – a Toledo-area staple that’s also celebrating its centennial year of service in 2020. The local restaurant chain, which is famous for its chili, has six locations throughout the city.

“With simply amazing food and always-friendly service, Rudy’s invokes a sense of nostalgia and comfort,” Fedor said. “This restaurant has made its mark as a cultural symbol and historical icon in our community.”
