This week, state Sens. Teresa Fedor (D-Toledo) and Theresa Gavarone (R-Toledo) presented two organizations in Lucas County—The Ability Center and the Lucas County Special Olympics—with Senate Resolutions.
The Ability Center of Greater Toledo, which this year celebrates its 100th anniversary, helps people with disabilities live independent lives by providing them with resources such as service dogs, medical equipment and community living. The center also partners with local businesses, organizations, and government agencies to eliminate barriers that prevent people with disabilities from living and working in the community.
“When I think about all the people they have served, including my family, I know they provide a tremendous increase on the quality of life—not only for individuals with disabilities, but for the entire family,” Fedor said.
“The Ability Center’s work is unparalleled,” Gavarone said. “Its focus on ensuring that everyone it serves learns independent living skills and can easily transition to college or the workforce is incredibly beneficial to countless people.”
The senators also recognized the Lucas County Special Olympics flag football team—the Lucas County Lightning—which won the 2019 State Championship game last fall. In November, the Lightning competed at the University of Cincinnati as well as at the home of the Cincinnati Bengals, Paul Brown Stadium. The team won its first game of the day against Hamilton County’s team, which sent the Lightning to the championship round. With a score of 38-12, the Lightning brought home its final victory against Union County’s team.
“The team’s victory upholds a longstanding tradition of excellence from the entire Special Olympics program in Lucas County,” Fedor said. “The Lightning’s enthusiasm and dedication is a testament to the mindset of true champions, both on and off the field.”
“It takes a passionate dedication and pure talent to win at the highest level,” Gavarone said. “We are proud of how well you represented all of Lucas County in Cincinnati.”
