Hottinger Bill Honoring Fallen Police Officer Passes Ohio House
June 21, 2018

COLUMBUS- The House passed legislation on Wednesday, sponsored by State Senator Jay Hottinger (R-Newark), honoring fallen Kirkersville Police Chief, Steven Eric DiSario.

The measure, amended into Senate Bill 86, would designate a portion of U.S. Route 40 in the Village of Kirkersville in Licking County, as the “Kirkersville Chief Steven “Eric” DiSario Memorial Highway.”

On May 12, 2017, Chief DiSario was shot and killed after responding to reports of a man with a gun near the Pine Kirk Care Center in Licking County. The shooter went on to kill two nursing home employees before taking his own life.

“The tragic death of Chief DiSario is still felt in Kirkersville and throughout Licking County,” said Hottinger. “I am thankful the Ohio House took steps to permanently honor the life of a hero who sacrificed everything in service to his community.”

DiSario served as a part-time Deputy Marshall with the Brice Police Department and as Auxiliary Officer with the Millersport Police Department. He joined the Kirkersville Police Department just three weeks prior to the Kirkersville shooting. He was 38 years old and is survived by his wife and six children.

Following Senate concurrence on changes made to Senate Bill 86, it will head to the Governor for a signature.
