COLUMBUS—On Wednesday, the Ohio Legislature passed House Bill 347, which included an amendment by Senator Jay Hottinger
(R-Newark) and Representative Al Landis (R-Dover) that would designate a portion of State Route 93 in Tuscarawas County as the “PFC Oscar F. Nicewander Memorial Highway” and a portion of State Route 520 in Holmes County as the “Cpl. Jerry Robert Spitler Memorial Highway.”
"This legislation seeks to ensure that the memory and sacrifice of PFC Nicewander and Cpl. Spitler is not forgotten,” said Hottinger. “They paid the ultimate sacrifice for freedom and this small act is the least we can do to honor these heroes.”
Both PFC Oscar Nicewander and Cpl. Jerry Spitler lost their lives during the Vietnam Conflict. Corporal Spitler was raised in Glenmont and tragically lost his life in the jungles of Vietnam on July 12, 1967. Private First Class Oscar Nicewander was from Dundee and also paid the ultimate sacrifice for freedom on March 20, 1967 in Long An Provice, South Vietnam.
“It was my honor to introduce legislation to honor Cpl. Spitler and PFC Nicewander,” said Landis. “Having attended the funeral for PFC Nicewander in the spring of 1967, I first learned what “American Hero” meant. By doing the road naming it honors not only their service, but also the sacrifice of their respective families.”
House Bill 347 will now be sent to the Governor for signing.
