State Senator Tina Maharath (D-Canal Winchester) was featured in Asian-American Changemakers, a documentary film series produced by Voyage Pictures for The Voice of America.

“The system was trying to fail me, but I felt like I always have to prove to the system that the American dream is meant for me too,” she said of her upbringing and decision to run for office.

During the 20-minute film, Senator Maharath spoke about growing up as the daughter of Laotian refugees. She also discussed her experience running for office as a 28-year-old single mother and now being a legislator as a mother of two young children. She says these experiences have helped shape her legislative priorities and how she represents her community.

“These folks are my neighbors. They’re my friends. They’re my co-workers. They’re my family, essentially,” Senator Maharath said. “I fight hard for my family, so this district is my family too.”

The film highlighted bills Senator Maharath has introduced, including Senate Bill 87, her bill to establish the Ohio Asian-American and Pacific Islander Affairs Commission and the Office of Asian-American and Pacific Islander Affairs. Senator Maharath – who recently introduced the Defend Our Children Act with Senator Cecil Thomas (D-Avondale) to help reduce violent crime and keep children safe – also discussed her concern for gun violence in Ohio and throughout the United States.

“I can’t sit at home and do nothing while this country and our state continues to not do something,” she said.
