Today, state Senator Tina Maharath (D-Canal Winchester) issued a statement urging swift passage of Senate Bill 314, which would require insurance coverage of medically necessary donor human milk in response to the ongoing baby formula shortage.
“Whether it is from formula or breast milk, it is absolutely vital that babies get the nutrition they need. Due to the ongoing shortage of baby formula, the need for human breast milk is greater than ever. Many women cannot produce enough milk on their own or are medically or physically unable to breastfeed their babies. In situations like these, mothers may turn to donor milk from a qualified milk bank. However, not all insurance companies will pay for this donor milk, even when deemed necessary by a medical professional. That is why I introduced and urge the swift passage of SB 314. This bill would require coverage of medically necessary donor milk so that babies can get the nutrition they need without debilitating costs to their families.”
