Obhof Testifies in Support of 179th Airlift Wing Resolution
February 27, 2013

COLUMBUS — State Senator Larry Obhof today gave testimony in support of Senate Concurrent Resolution 5, which urges Congress and the U.S. Air Force to maintain the C-27J program at the 179th Airlift Wing based out of the Ohio Air National Guard station in Mansfield.  The Air Force has proposed retiring a number of aircraft, including the C-27J Spartan – a twin turboprop used to transport troops and supplies. Retiring or relocating the aircraft would result in the loss of 800 jobs in the Mansfield community.

“The C-27J aircraft - and the men and women of the 179th Airlift Wing - have completed missions across the globe, serving their country with honor and distinction,” Obhof said. “This resolution will help demonstrate Ohio’s commitment to this program and will urge federal officials to consider any and all alternatives to the potential loss of 800 jobs in the Mansfield area.”

The resolution unanimously passed the Senate Public Safety, Local Government & Veterans Affairs Committee. It is expected to receive a vote by the full Senate in the coming weeks. A similar resolution, proposed by State Representatives Mark Romanchuk (R- Ontario) and Margaret Ann Ruhl (R- Mount Vernon), recently passed the Ohio House of Representatives.
