COLUMBUS– State Senator Larry Obhof (R–Medina) today submitted written testimony to the National Commission on the Structure of the Air Force to urge the Commission to work to ensure long-term stability for the 179th Airlift Wing in Mansfield.
Over the past several years, Senator Obhof worked to urge the Obama Administration to reevaluate plans to reduce personnel in the Air Force and Air National Guard. Such a move would have negatively affected Ohio, and would have been particularly harmful to the 179th Airlift Wing, which is stationed at Mansfield-Lahm Regional Airport. Earlier this year, Senator Obhof and Representative Mark Romanchuk (R-Ontario) sponsored resolutions urging Congress and the President to maintain the operations of the 179th Airlift Wing at the Mansfield base.
“I am thankful that the Air Force reconsidered its plan and gave the 179th Airlift Wing a new mission,” said Obhof. “However, ensuring the long-term stability of the 179th is crucial to our defense and disaster-readiness capabilities, and to the economic strength of the Mansfield region.”
The 179th Airlift Wing has supported military operations around the world and has participated in significant humanitarian efforts, including airlift efforts abroad and disaster relief efforts here at home.
