O'Brien Announces Brownfield Grants in 32nd Senate District
June 22, 2022
COLUMBUS—State Senator Sandra O'Brien (R-Ashtabula) today announced several grants awarded throughout the 32nd Senate District as part of the first round of funds from the Brownfield Remediation Program.

"The abandoned and condemned brownfields across Ohio still hold potential for economic and community development," O'Brien said. "The Brownfield Remediation Program is a great start in revitalizing these spaces."

Among the first round of grants are several projects in the 32nd Senate District, including $1,207100 for the cleanup and remediation of the former Astatic Corporation property. Industrial uses on this property date to the 1800s and include a foundry, tin can manufacturing, tungsten lamp works and most recently the manufacture of microphones and electronics by the Astatic Corporation. Operations ceased on the site in the early 2000s and the two original buildings were demolished in 2006. Remediation activities include removal of contaminated soil and installation of vapor mitigation system. After cleanup, the existing 70,000 square foot structure will be redeveloped into a workforce development center for re-entry and training.

The Trumbull County Land Reutilization Corporation will also receive over $3 million for various brownfield projects including the cleanup and remediation of the former Warren Gasification Plant, the cleanup and decontamination of the former Niles GE Plant property, and an assessment of the former steel mill at 200 West.
