Sens. O'Brien and Rulli Introduce Electric Vehicle Incentives
December 17, 2019
Today, state Senators Sean O’Brien (D-Bazetta) and Michael Rulli (R-Salem) announced legislation to encourage the purchase of electric vehicles in Ohio.

“Electric vehicles are the future and we are trying to capitalize on that,” said Sen. O’Brien. “Here in Ohio, and particularly in my district in the Mahoning Valley, we have the skilled workforce, the infrastructure and the business relationships necessary to become the electric vehicle capital of the world. Our bill encourages Ohioans to switch to electric vehicles, signaling our seriousness about becoming leaders in this industry.”

The bipartisan bill incentivizes the purchase of electric vehicles by offering a $500 sales tax credit for the purchase of one electric vehicle for personal use; a $1,000 sales tax credit for each of up to 10 electric vehicles to be used for commercial use; and a $1,500 sales tax credit for the construction of charging stations for both commercial and personal use. The legislation would sunset after five years.

“Our area is in the midst of a true transformation,” said Sen. Rulli. “Working across party lines, Senator O’Brien and I are determined to deliver results, not just talk. We want the state of Ohio to be a leader in the technologies of the future, and that future is electric vehicles.”

The bill will soon be assigned to a committee for consideration by members of the Ohio Senate.
