Sen. Sykes Statement on Third Ohio Supreme Court Ruling on State Legislative Maps
March 17, 2022
Today, state Senator Vernon Sykes (D-Akron), co-chair of the Ohio Redistricting Commission, issued the following statement after the Ohio Supreme Court invalidated the newest state legislative maps adopted by majority Commission members on February 24. The Court gave the Commission until March 28 to draw new, constitutional maps:

“We could have avoided the troubles we are now facing with the primary election if we had simply adopted fair, constitutional maps to begin with. Now, the way to break the back-and-forth cycle between the Commission and the Court and minimize further disruptions to the election is if all Commission members work together in a bipartisan, transparent manner to deliver the fair, constitutional maps Ohioans have demanded. Democrats have long been eager to deliver on this obligation, and I hope my Republican colleagues are finally ready to do the same.”
