Senator Sykes Applauds Funding For Summit County Investment Projects

Today, state Senator Vernon Sykes (D-Akron) applauded the Ohio Senate’s passage of the state’s Capital Budget, which includes more than $26 million for economic development projects in Ohio’s 28th Senate District.

“One of the greatest aspects of my job is helping to improve our communities and bring positive change to the people of Senate District 28,” said Senator Sykes. “The passage of the state’s Capital Budget will bring investment to the district and have a positive impact on the health, education and wellbeing of our communities.”

Local projects in the bill include:

  • Repairs to and expansion of the Barberton Head Start Facility

  • Building the Hinton/Humiston Fitness Park in the Village of Lakemore

  • Creation of the Axess Pointe Community Health Center

  • Restoration of the John Brown House

  • Renovations to the Akron Battered Women’s Shelter

  • Renovations to the Glendora House for Homeless Families with Children

  • Renovations to the Barberton Justice Center

  • Redeveloping land to be used for a greater Akron CDL training center

  • Improvements to the United Disability Services facility located in Akron

  • Addition of new Africa and Asia exhibits to the Akron Zoological Park

  • Additional parking spaces for the Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens Campus

  • Restoration and expansion of the Akron Civic Theatre

  • Creation of Finish Line Park at the location of the old University of Akron stadium

  • Several projects to improve University of Akron infrastructure

The Capital Budget, introduced in late February, includes $2.6 billion in funding for capital improvement projects around the state. The bill now goes to the Governor for his signature.
