COLUMBUS – This week, state Senator Vernon Sykes (D-Akron) was presented with the 2018 “Legislative Champion” award by the Ohio Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs.
“It was a true honor to be presented the Ohio Alliance of Boys and Girls Clubs 2018 Legislative Champion Award,” said Senator Sykes. “I am confident the future is in good hands when it's in the hands of these children. These are our future leaders, and that makes me optimistic for Ohio.”
“We are so happy to present the ‘Legislative Champion’ award to Senator Sykes to recognize his consistent and enthusiastic support of the Clubs and the kids we serve,” said Julie Johnson, president and chief executive of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Western Reserve. “We are grateful to have his support in the Ohio Senate.”
Each year, the Ohio Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs presents Legislative Champion Awards to state legislators who have supported the clubs across the state in their mission to enable all young people, especially those who need them most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.
Senator Sykes has been a strong supporter of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Western Reserve in Akron. He has served as a judge in the clubs’ annual “Youth of the Year” competition, has hosted club youth for a fishing clinic with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and has supported many club events. Senator Sykes always has an open door for club leaders and has supported the entire Ohio Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs in the state budget.
The Ohio Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs serves over 40,000 youth at 64 Club sites in 21 cities throughout Ohio. Clubs provide out-of-school time programming that gives youth access to mentors and programs that will challenge them to achieve in school, develop a strong moral compass and make healthy lifestyle choices.
