AKRON – This week, State Senator Vernon Sykes (D-Akron) hosted his annual fishing clinic for children in the community. In collaboration with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), young Ohioans participated in several fishing related activities throughout the day. The children learned about fish native to Ohio’s waters as well as how to cast a fishing rod, catch a fish, and filet and cook fish.
COLUMBUS – Today, Senator Vernon Sykes (D-Akron) expressed deep concerns regarding the budget passed by the Ohio General Assembly. The bill provides a tax cut that favors the wealthy, while cutting funding to state agencies, education, and health care services. The bill also freezes Medicaid expansion - which will cause thousands of Ohioans to lose health insurance - and cuts funding to some schools including in Senate District 28.
COLUMBUS – Today, Senator Vernon Sykes (D-Akron) announced that he has offered over 40 individual amendments into Substitute House Bill 49 – Ohio’s 2-year budget bill – on behalf of the families of the 28th Senate District and Ohio. Senator Sykes’ amendments focus on increasing access to early childhood education and critical state and federal resources. They also aim to improve life for the residents of his district.
COLUMBUS—Today, the Ohio Senate announced that State Senator Vernon Sykes (D-Akron) has been appointed to serve as Ranking Member of the Senate Education Committee and Vice Chair on the Finance Subcommittee on Primary and Secondary Education for the 132nd General Assembly.
COLUMBUS – The 132nd Ohio General Assembly officially began with the swearing in of new members and leadership for the Ohio Senate. The Senate Democratic Caucus welcomed two new members, Senator Vernon Sykes (D-Akron, pictured middle) and Senator Sean O’Brien (D-Bazetta, pictured left).
