Sen. Thomas, Rep. Miranda announce creation of bicameral Ohio Gun Violence Prevention Caucus
April 7, 2021
Today, state Senator Cecil Thomas (D-Cincinnati) and state Rep. Jessica E. Miranda (D-Forest Park) announced the creation of the bicameral Ohio Gun Violence Prevention Caucus. An invite has been sent out to all Ohio House and Senate members to participate in the legislative caucus focused on advancing commonsense gun safety measures in Ohio.

“I look forward to launching the Ohio Gun Violence Prevention Caucus with Rep. Miranda. The caucus format will allow us to devote time for wide-ranging discussions on gun violence. As a community we must find solutions that include both common sense gun control measures and protecting gun owners’ rights,” said Sen. Thomas.

“Too often in Ohio and around the nation we find ourselves mourning the loss of individuals to preventable gun violence. As state lawmakers, we have a responsibility to collaborate to find solutions that keep our communities safe while respecting the rights of law-abiding citizens,” said Rep. Miranda. “This caucus will create a platform for lawmakers, policy experts, activists, and everyday citizens to discuss and advocate for legislation that will save lives.”

Since 2009, there have been 246 mass shootings in the United States, resulting in 1,401 people shot and killed and 950 people shot and wounded. In that same timeframe, there have been 12 mass shootings in Ohio, resulting in 61 people shot and killed and 21 people shot and wounded, according to Everytown Research.

The Ohio Gun Violence Prevention Caucus plans to begin holding monthly meetings this summer. Each month’s meeting will focus on a different topic, such as preventing school shootings, addressing domestic violence, safe gun storage, suicide prevention, and more.
