Columbus—This week, the governor signed Senate Bill 124, designating May as Asthma Awareness Month and May 5th as Childhood Asthma Awareness Day. State Senator Cecil Thomas (D-Cincinnati) is the primary sponsor of the legislation. Asthma is a chronic condition that affects 13-15% of the population. Asthma diagnoses are increasing, and 6.8 million children in the United States suffer from the disease.
“I’d like to thank my colleagues in the General Assembly, as well as the governor, for supporting this legislation,” said Senator Thomas. “It is my hope that increased awareness will help us save lives, improve treatments, and move toward finding a cure for this chronic disease.”
Former Ninth District Senator Eric Kearney sponsored similar legislation in the 130th General Assembly. Prior to leaving office due to term limits, Senator Kearney also walked across the entire state to raise awareness for childhood asthma.
Senate Bill 124 was co-sponsored by a large bipartisan group of legislators and passed through the General Assembly unanimously.
