Today, state Senator Cecil Thomas (D-Avondale) issued a statement in response to President Biden’s announcement that he would pardon federal convictions for simple marijuana possession and direct the departments of Justice and Health and Human Services to review how marijuana is scheduled under federal law. The announcement also called on governors to issue similar pardons at the state level.
“I am grateful President Biden has taken this bold and life changing step toward decriminalizing marijuana possession. This is yet another example of his heartfelt concern for people’s quality of life,” Thomas said. “These pardons will help thousands convicted of simple marijuana possession who have faced barriers to employment, housing, and educational opportunities. As a state Senator and member of the 134th General Assembly, I urge the Governor of this state to also take the same bold approach in Ohio.”
Reclassifying marijuana would ease the burden on legal medical marijuana businesses in Ohio and enable critical medical research that is often restricted due to marijuana’s classification as a Schedule 1 drug.
