This week, state Senator Cecil Thomas (D-Avondale) received the 2020 Legacy Alumni Award from Union Institute & University’s International Alumni Association in recognition of his leadership, social responsibility and service to the community.
“As a proud graduate of Union, where I received my degree in Criminal Justice Management, I’m extremely honored to have received this award,” Thomas said. “I hope that my work will inspire current and future generations of students to leave their own legacy by committing to a cause, reaching higher in their careers or taking action when something doesn’t seem right.”
The Alumni Association highlighted Thomas’s work to increase the percentage of African Americans and women within the Cincinnati Police Department to 40% during his career as an officer, as well as his service as the executive director of the Cincinnati Human Relations Commission and as a member of the Cincinnati City Council prior to his election to the Ohio Senate. Senator Thomas currently serves as Assistant Minority leader and as ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
The Legacy Alumni Award recognizes alumni who have exemplified the university’s mission and values and demonstrate a commitment to being “engaged, enlightened and empowered to pursue professional goals and lives of learning, service and responsibility.” The award honors alumni who have achieved significant recognition for their service to society and the university through transformative social action or other contribution.
