COLUMBUS— Today, State Senator Sandra Williams (D-Cleveland) congratulated several organizations in Cleveland that have been awarded grants from the Ohio Department of Education Community Connectors Grant Program for over $1.2 million dollars. The funds will be used to help mentor young people in our community within the age group of 9-18.

COLUMBUS— Today, State Senator Sandra Williams (D-Cleveland) voiced opposition to the passage of House Bill 180, which will eliminate the City of Cleveland’s current local hiring standards, established in the Fannie Lewis Law (2004), which guarantee a certain percentage of city residents’ employment on public construction projects.

COLUMBUS— Today, State Senator Sandra Williams (D-Cleveland) delivered sponsor testimony to the Senate Transportation, Commerce and Labor Committee on Senate Bill 228, which would prohibit the use of non-compete provisions in employment contracts in the broadcast industry. In Ohio, nearly two dozen radio and television personalities are out of work, in their chosen field, due to non-compete clauses.

Earley – Cleveland Municipal Court, and Rev. C. Jay Matthews – Mt. Sinai Baptist Church to examine grand jury reform in Ohio.

COLUMBUS— State Senator Sandra Williams introduced Senate Joint Resolution 4 to amend Section 10 of Article I of the Constitution of the State of Ohio. This legislation will eliminate the grand jury process from the Constitution and will allow for the process to be reformed and reviewed by the Ohio legislature.

COLUMBUS— Yesterday, State Senator Sandra Williams (D-Cleveland) introduced Senate Bill 258, which will require the Ohio Attorney General to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate and bring forth charges in cases involving officer use of lethal force against an unarmed suspect. State Senator Charleta B. Tavares (D - Columbus) is cosponsoring the bill.

COLUMBUS— State Senator Sandra Williams (D-Cleveland) has introduced Senate Bill 256, which would require law enforcement officers to collect data and maintain information from all motor vehicle stops, questionings, and delays to determine whether bias-based policing factored into these actions. Senator Charleta B. Tavares (D-Columbus) is co-sponsoring this bill.

COLUMBUS - Senator Sandra Williams sent the following letter to Governor John Kasich, requesting that funds be directed to the city of Cleveland for violence prevention in light of recent tragedies, including the shooting deaths of 3-year-old Major Howard and 5-year-old Ramon Burnett.
