Yuko Comments on DeWine Proposal to Update Background Check Reporting System
August 28, 2019
Today, Governor Mike DeWine announced that part of his forthcoming gun reform legislation will include stronger reporting requirements for the background check system. Senate Minority Leader Kenny Yuko (D-Richmond Heights) issued the following statement in response:
“Better data and reporting will improve our background check system and save lives, especially given the link between domestic violence and gun violence. I’m also encouraged that the governor believes the system update costs should be the responsibility of the State, not our local governments.
“The governor’s proposal today is a good step, but it only goes so far. We need universal background checks, as Senate Democrats have proposed, to truly ensure that we keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people. My colleagues and I are eager to start hearings on comprehensive, commonsense gun reforms, and we’re ready to get to work – now.”
