Senate Passes Cirino Bill Honoring Fallen Euclid Police Officer
COLUMBUS—The Ohio Senate unanimously passed Senate Bill 334, sponsored by Senator Jerry C. Cirino (R-Kirtland), which names a portion of Interstate 480 in Cuyahoga County as the "Officer Jacob J. Derbin Memorial Highway."
"Officer Derbin fulfilled his call to duty to protect the community he proudly served," said Senator Cirino. "His life and legacy are a reflection of the values he committed to uphold. I'm grateful to see this bill pass and to be joined in the Senate alongside the family of Officer Derbin."
Officer Jacob Derbin was tragically killed in the line of duty on May 11, 2024, when he was ambushed and shot by a suspect while responding to an emergency call. Despite his injuries, Derbin managed to warn his fellow officers about the suspect’s location. A third-generation police officer, 23 year-old Officer Derbin had joined the force 10 months earlier and was engaged to be married to his high-school sweetheart.
The bill now heads to the Ohio House of Representatives for further consideration.
