COLUMBUS—State Senator Michele Reynolds (R-Canal Winchester) voted alongside her colleagues to suspend Ohio's gas and diesel tax for 90 days.

The Motor Fuel Tax (MFT) currently applies a 38.5 cent tax per gallon of gas and a 47 cent tax per gallon of diesel. By suspending the tax for the next three months, Ohioans will save $725 million in fuel taxes at the pump.

As state senators, it's our mission to make Ohio the best place to live and work, said Senator Reynolds. While fuel prices have spiked due to factors outside the state's control, this 90-day gas tax holiday is an opportunity to show Ohio constituents that we hear them and are here for them, while putting $725 million back in the hands of taxpayers.

Budget surpluses from the current fiscal year will cover the cost of highway and local government construction projects that normally utilize funds from the gas tax.

For accounting purposes, the MFT will be reduced to 1/100th of a cent per gallon which also protects certain border counties from seeing unintended tax consequences due to neighboring states levying their own tax on fuel sold into Ohio if another tax is not levied.

The legislation incorporates language from SB 475, introduced by Senator Reynolds and Senator Timken, to suspend Ohio's gas tax.
