Antonio Raises Concern Over Education Funding Freeze
Today, Senate Democratic Leader Nickie J. Antonio (D-Lakewood) issued a statement following the U.S. Department of Education’s decision to halt $185 million in education funding to Ohio.
“Withholding critical funding for education is an attack on Ohio’s children,” said Antonio. “At a time when the state legislature created a budget that contains broken promises to our public schools, this is just another politically-motivated blow to our children’s education that threatens our future. Ohioans and our country deserve better.”
According to recent reporting, the U.S. Department of Education has decided to freeze $6.8 billion in federal education funding that Congress already dedicated to states. The funds– nearly $185 million being appropriated to Ohio– support programs that serve students from low-income families, students with disabilities, and English language learners.
A delay in funding will disproportionately harm the most vulnerable students in Ohio and across the country. More information can be found here.
