Senator Huffman Issues Statement on the Introduction of Assisted Suicide Legislation

COLUMBUS—State Senator Steve Huffman (R-Tipp City) made the following statement regarding recently introduced legislation to legalize Medical Aid in Dying in Ohio:

"As a practicing physician, I took the Hippocratic Oath which states in part that 'I will never use treatment to injure or wrong the sick.' This oath is taken by doctors across the national, religious, and ideological spectrum and provides guiding medical ethics for physicians.

Medical Aid in Dying, otherwise known as Assisted Suicide, directly contradicts thousands of years of medical practice and religious ethics. It is morally wrong to avoid a natural death. For the government to allow such a practice means that it is no longer trying to protect and help the less fortunate but actively destroying them.

The slippery slope of this legislation is exemplified by Canada's continued expansion of the scope of practice for assisted suicide. This has led to the killing of many disabled and mentally troubled individuals in Canada at the hands of doctors meant to care for them.

As a pro-life member of the Ohio Senate, I am actively opposed to this legislation. I will continue to urge my colleagues in both the House and Senate to not move forward in consideration of this bill."
