Senator Cutrona Announces Grant Award for Workforce Housing in Youngstown
State Senator Al Cutrona (R-Canfield) is pleased to announce that $2.5 million in grant funding has been awarded to the City of Youngstown to develop up to 220 workforce housing units as part of the Rural Economic Development District (REDD) program.
“Creating opportunities for families to live and invest in their own communities empowers our neighborhoods,” said Senator Cutrona. “As our economy grows so does our housing, this grant will provide vital funding for the construction of quality and affordable homes. I know this award will bring greater opportunities for workers across The Valley and Eastern Ohio."
The $2.5 million grant award will be used to improve roads, sidewalks, lighting, and other public infrastructure, while also connecting new homes to existing water and sewer systems. Many of the homes will be built on vacant lots owned by the city and the Mahoning County Land Bank, helping transform underutilized properties into new residential opportunities. Homebuyers will receive a 100 percent, 15-year property tax abatement and be eligible for down-payment assistance through the city’s At Home program.
The project is a collaboration between the City of Youngstown, the Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation, Mercy Health Youngstown, and other community partners. This project will meet increase demand in housing created by investments from the Ultium Cells facility in Warren and other regional economic development projects.
