Senate Concurs on Historic Brenner Education Bill
COLUMBUS—The Ohio Senate concurred on Senate Bill 19, sponsored by Senator Andrew Brenner (R-Delaware), which enacts historic changes to Ohio's education law to improve education Quality for Ohio's students.
The bill seeks to encourage improvement in math for Ohio's students, requiring that any school building with 51% or more of students scoring limited on an end-of-course mathematics assessment, the schools must submit a Math Achievement Improvement Plan to the Department of Education and Workforce.
"The bill not only addresses the needs of struggling students," said Senator Brenner. "It also creates accelerated learning opportunities for high-achieving students."
The bill includes several other targeted changes, but one major measure is that intervention efforts to the building level rather than the school district level. This is to ensure schools with the greatest need receive more focused attention and support.
"It is my hope that by providing supports for both struggling and advanced students," said Sen. Brenner, "We will see meaningful improvement across all levels of mathematical achievement."
The Senate will now send SB 19 to Governor DeWine and awaits his signature.
