Ingram Responds to Governor's Public Safety Announcements in Cincinnati

Today, state Senator Catherine D. Ingram (D–Cincinnati) issued the following statement after Governor Mike DeWine’s announcement of new state and federal partnerships with the Cincinnati Police Department to address violent crime:

“Collaboration and communication with our state and local authorities have always been essential," said Ingram. "Strong partnerships ensure we are using existing resources effectively, without duplicating services. I was pleased to hear that the National Guard will not be deployed, because it is not needed in our city.

Recent measures by Cincinnati city leaders include expanded police patrols, stricter youth curfews in high-crime areas, drone-assisted responses, and specialized task forces targeting hot spots, vending violations, and noise ordinances. Early indications suggest that some of these efforts are beginning to reduce property crime and improve public perception of safety, though violent crime remains a challenge in Downtown and Over-the-Rhine, particularly during evening and nighttime hours.

"Cincinnati is a vibrant city, welcoming both residents and visitors, and everyone should be able to enjoy it safely. Questions remain, including the impact of similar initiatives in other cities, and how decisions are made when federal and state agencies are involved in charging an individual," said Ingram. "I commend the city for the work already underway to reduce crime and will continue to monitor this issue closely to ensure we remain focused on the goal of keeping Cincinnati safe for all.”
