Ingram Supports Veto Protecting Minor Labor Laws
Today, state Senator Catherine D. Ingram (D-Cincinnati) commended the veto of Senate Bill 50, which would have allowed 14- and 15-year-olds to work additional hours after school during the academic year by extending the current limit from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The bill was heard earlier this year in the Senate Workforce Development Committee, where Senator Ingram, serving as Ranking Member, raised concerns about the risks this proposal posed to Ohio’s minor labor laws.
“I am pleased that Governor DeWine vetoed S.B. 50. The slippery slope this legislation could create for our minor labor protections should not be dismissed,” said Ingram. “Students already have ample opportunities to work during the school year and on breaks. Expanding these hours could take away critical time for extracurricular activities, homework, and the rest they need to be prepared for school the next day.”
Senate Bill 50 received seven hearings between the Ohio Senate and House of Representatives this year before being passed in November. Governor DeWine then vetoed the bill on December 3, 2025.
