Ohio Black Maternal Health Caucus Hosts Second Annual Summit
Today, state Senators and co-chairs of the Ohio Black Maternal Health Caucus Catherine D. Ingram (D-Cincinnati) and Paula Hicks-Hudson (D-Toledo) hosted the Second Annual Black Maternal Health Summit at the Ohio Statehouse, convening legislators, state agencies, healthcare providers, and community leaders to advance solutions for improving maternal and infant health outcomes across Ohio.
The day began with a press conference, followed by opening remarks from Ingram and Hicks-Hudson, who emphasized the importance of continued collaboration and policy action to address disparities in maternal health.
The summit featured an agency panel with representatives from the Department of Children and Youth, Department of Medicaid, and the Ohio Board of Nursing, highlighting statewide efforts to strengthen care systems. A provider panel followed, showcasing community-based and clinical approaches from organizations including Village of Healing, CelebrateOne, TriHealth, and Birthing Beautiful Communities.
Former state Representative Janine Boyd delivered the keynote address, reflecting on progress since the Caucus’s founding and the ongoing work needed to achieve equity in maternal health.
Groundwork Ohio and bi3 gave a presentation on March of Dimes, underscoring the importance of data-driven solutions. The event concluded with a fatherhood panel featuring individuals from Rise Above, Urban Family Development League, and Talbert House Fatherhood Initiation who highlighted the role of fathers and partners in supporting healthy families.
In closing remarks, Ingram and Hicks-Hudson reaffirmed their commitment to advancing policies that ensure healthier outcomes for all Ohio families.
